Meet Our Current Breeding Pens
This season our pens are ready and our chooks are starting to lay which means baby chicks are underway. Heres a list of our sorted pens which we will be hatching just for our followers wanting a Sunset Valley Chick!
Our season begins every spring and summer where we offer a selection of fertile eggs for those that have clucky chooks or want to hatch their own. (Not all breeds available, enquiries welcome.) Plus a selection of our day old purebred chicks are offered weekly depending on availability in spring and summer. Of course if your willing to wait we also grow up our pullets and cockerals which we start re-homing as soon as we can sex them in Summer. We will blog about what is available and make sure to visit us at our markets where we always take a variety of what is available when in season.

SILKIES
At Sunset Valley Chicks we have vaccinated Silkie pullets (16-18 weeks old) for sale throughout most of the year for our followers. We do offer some fertile eggs and day old chicks (unvaccinated) when available.
Our colours are mainly grey splash, partridge, black, white and other mixed colours with at times bearded Silkies also available.
Some special care is needed because Silkies don't tolerate extreme climates very well, especially wet and rainy climates, they get soaked because their feathers aren't waterproof. They also don't lay as many eggs as other birds and the eggs are not very large. So if keeping chickens for food is important, they aren't a suitable breed but make up for it in their cuteness, friendliness and antics.
We suggest that you have at least 3 Silkies at any one stage as they usually stick with their own kind. They don't perch, but rather prefer to huddle and having a few more together means extra warmth together through those colder months.
A Silkie hen usually starts laying eggs around 7-9 months of age. This is later than most chicken breeds since Silkies are slower to mature. You can expect them to lay about 100-120 small cream eggs per year or 2-3 per week. Since they tend to go broody often, their egg laying is often interrupted and inconsistent.

BUFF ORPINGTON
A favourite for those that love big birds! The Orpington is a British breed of chicken. It was bred in the late nineteenth century by William Cook of Orpington, Kent in south-east England. It was intended to be a dual-purpose breed, to be reared both for eggs and for meat, but soon became exclusively a show bird and a very much-loved breed to add to your flock.
They lay about 190 eggs a year. The egg is a light brown shade. We have Buff Standard Orpington colour only but do have Bantam Lavender and Bantam Chocolate Orpingtons at Sunset Valley Chicks as well for those with smaller backyards. They are a friendly calm natured bird a very popular breed amongst our followers.

Bantam Orpingtons are known for their friendly demeanor, attractive appearance, and egg-laying capabilities, making them a popular choice.
Like standard Orpingtons, Bantam Orpingtons come in various colour varieties but at Sunset Valley Chicks focus on Lavender and Chocolate in the bantam, they have a round and broad body shape and fluffy feathers.

BUFF COCHIN
In 2021 Sunset Valley Chicks took over an existing flock of buff cochins from a very good friend. They are a big ornamental bird that lay light brown eggs.
The Cochin is a breed of large domestic chicken. It derives from large feather-legged chickens brought from China to Europe and North America in the 1840s and 1850s. It is reared principally for exhibition.
Their life span is 5-7 years they are a calm docile bird suitable for anyone that loves these fancy feathered feet friends. They do not lay lots of eggs and to only expect 2 eggs per week. But they make up for it with their beauty.
With minimal eggs laying we have minimal chicks that we will sell at day olds but expect if your willing to pay to have a chance to purchase some nice pullets from us in spring and summer.

The Exchequer Leghorn is a beautiful bird and a good layer of pure white eggs. They are great forages and independent bird. They have a reputation of being 'flighty' but we haven't found this to be the case. We find them exquisite and because of their pattern colouring stunning to look at.

Quantity: 5-6 eggs/hen/week
When it comes to behaviour, Leghorns are relatively independent birds. While they can be tamed, they rarely become comfortable with handling. Due to their light weight and being highly active, Leghorns have been noted to fly over small fences with relative ease and roost in the branches of trees. For this reason, it is recommended to clip their wings after each moult if needed if you are in a small back yard.

The chicken breeds we have got in this pen is this season a mix of the beautiful blue egg of a creme legbar or the olive/khaki colour of our regular girls which were originally started with a creme legar boy and marans. Olive Eggers are a cross between a breed that lays eggs with true blue shells and a breed that lays eggs with really dark brown shells. Silver Barnevelder
Our Silver Double Laced Barnevelders lay a beautiful darker egg and are just beautiful docile breed to look and have in anyones ack yard to add a nice layer to your flock. They are a somewhat active breed but not very flighty. Barnevelder hens lay 150-200 medium to large eggs a year. This is much fewer eggs than a layer breed, such as Leghorns or Australorp will give you, but is a respectable number for a beautiful breed. They will usually begin laying eggs at around 8 months old, which is much later than other birds. The hens are good mothers, brooding their own eggs and giving attentive care to their offspring. Cold and heat tolerant, they are excellent choices for those who live in weather extremes who are looking for beautiful additions to their flock. Inquisitive and smart, these birds are good at foraging and problem solving, they always find their way home at the end of the day.

Muscovy Ducks
Temperament: Females make the best pets and the Muscovy Duck will wag its tail if it's happy to see you. Lifespan: 7 to 8 years.
Recommended for: anyone wishing to keep ducks.
Maintenance: low but we all have a different level of tolerance to mess. they require water to bath and drink from.
Muscovies are the all time versatile pet -they are interesting looking and the biggest of the duck breeds. They are super friendly and can lay up to 180 eggs a year and can go broody though several times a year if you let them.
We house our ducks free range with our breeders getting locked up at night if they are sitting. (for those that have seen us know we have trained our breeders to go into lockable dog kennels where they build their nests - well most of the time, some have other ideas where they want to nest).
Muscovy are the only duck I know that have sharp claws so though super social and friendly we suggest that petting them from the ground only so has to avoid the claws. Muscovies apparently make good eating (we haven't tried them by choice) and their eggs make for the best baking. Muscovies will give you years of entertainment and can live up to about 8 years of age.
Not like geese, a male duck can mate and have several and different girlfriends, but to maintain fertility they should only mate with their own kind. Having a male duck without females can be dangerous if you are keeping chooks as he will want to mate and they have a different anatomy to a chook.
We love our ducks and we are sure you will too!

Sebastopol Geese
The Sebastopol geese originated in south eastern Europe. The Sebastopol is readily identified by its feathers: long, soft-quilled, curling feathers drape elegantly from its wings, body, and tail. The white variety of the Sebastopol is best known. Both males and females have pure white feathers that contrast with their bright blue eyes and orange bills and feet. Juveniles often have traces of grey. There are also grey and buff colour varieties.
Sebastopols are medium-sized geese and are flightless because of their feathering. We have full and half chested Sebastopols breeders and generally do not sell the goslings until we know they are from the Sebastopol parents.
Sebastopol Geese are moderate layers, producing 25-35 large, white eggs annually. They are broody and good mothers and can be used as adoptive parents for goslings of their own or other breeds. Ganders can be mated with one to four geese, but usually they will mate for life with the family they choose. They can live up to 25 years. So a long term commitment if you are planning on having them as pets.
To keep Sebastopols, clean water for swimming and drinking should be made available. They have webbed feet and are good swimmers. While they’re hardy and can be raised successfully in cold climates, it’s a good idea to provide more protection during wet, cold, and windy weather. This attractive, friendly breed has a quiet and pleasant disposition, are excellent foragers, and they make awesome pets as they are more on the shy side than aggressive like some other goose breeds.

Farm Yard Geese
Backyard geese bring advantages to a flock if your thinking about owning geese. There’s a whole lot more to them than just their hissing and honking. If you haven’t considered geese for your backyard before, you may want to think about adding a few to your farm.
Geese are grazers, they are vegetarian birds (unlike ducks and chickens), and they have a never ending appetite for fresh greens. While you wouldn’t want them weeding your standard vegetable garden, they can be perfect picking around berries, bushes or small trees. Vineyards and orchards have geese as weeders at the same time as it saves money on expensive, toxic weed killers and time and backache from hand-weeding.
Geese are great alarm birds as they can be loud and will notify with a honk or squawk that something unusual is happening. Did you know you can eat the eggs too! Geese can live up to 25 years so owning geese is a commitment, but the years of entertainment and elegance of these beautiful birds is worth every bit of commitment. Please note these birds can fly so domesticating them so they don't wander far or clipping their wing may need to be an option.
At Sunset Valley Chicks we have a variety of Toulouse, Embden, Pilgrim and Sebastopols as our breeders.

Guinea Fowl
Do Guinea Fowl keep snakes away? Thanks to their noise, Guineas are an excellent way to protect the yard from uninvited snakes. In a flock, Guinea Fowl will sound out loudly to alert you of the presence of a snake. If the snake is small, a flock may encircle the snake and may even kill it. Guinea Fowl can fly for short distances and can roost in trees at night. Guinea Fowl can live up to 10-15 years.
When introducing Guinea Fowl we recommend that you have them contained and if only young not let out until at least 4 months or so. Especially if you are owning them for the first time and have no others.
We choose to free range our guard gang of guineas and they do not get locked up at night at all. It's up to you if you want them to be locked up at night keep in mind that they can be bossy and harass other stock like chickens. Though we know many that have successfully kept chickens and guineas together. We generally sell day old keets right up to off heat so that way you have the choose how you want to raise them. Guinea Fowl can fly for short distances and can roost in trees at night.
Lifespan: Guinea fowl can live up to 10-15 years. At Sunset Valley Chicks we breed a mix colour flock.
